When a negatively charged rubber rod is brought into contact with an insulated neutral conducting sphere, some electrons on the rubber rod are now able to move onto the sphere. When the rubber rod is removed, the sphere is left with a negative charge. This method of charging is called charging by conduction. The object being charged in such a process is always left with a charge having the same sign as the object doing the charging, and the amount of charge equally divides between the rod and the sphere.
